D. The Beginnings of a New Church in Antioch (11:19-30)

BEHIND THE TEXT

After the contentious meeting in Jerusalem, an abrupt shift in narrative setting returns the reader’s attention to the persecution after Stephen’s death. Like Philip in Samaria, others took the gospel elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean where they fled. The present narrative picks up another story line leading from that earlier persecution.

Here, the proclamation to non-Jews in Antioch is an implication of the previous scene: God had opened the door to include Gentiles within God’s purposes of salvation (see v 18). Thus, this passage functions as a strategic narrative link between the preceding and subsequent materials (see Longenecker 2004, 185-204).
